“Black people UNITE!…” I think it was Mos Def who hollered that term in one of his songs.  It’s the premise behind one of the more controversial people and groups of American history, the Black Panthers. Although I admittedly do not know much about them, what I was told and taught was that they were about and for the upward momentum of African-Americans everywhere and will do so by almost any means necessary. Huey Newton and Bobby Seale were some of the more famous figures of the Black Panthers.  Here’s an excerpt from Wikipedia on Huey in particular:

Huey Newton was an African-American political and urban activist who, along with Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party for Self Defense.

As a student at Merritt College in Oakland, Newton became involved in politics in the Bay Area. He joined the Afro-American Association, became a prominent member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, Beta Tau chapter, and played a role in getting the first African-American history course adopted as part of the college’s curriculum. He read the works of Karl MarxVladimir LeninFrantz Fanon,Malcolm XMao Zedong, and Che Guevara. It was during his time at Merritt College[7] that Newton and Bobby Seale organized the Black Panther Party for Self Defense in October 1966. Based on a casual conversation, Seale became Chairman and Newton became Minister of Defense.[8]

Regarding the tattoo… When the client first asked to get this on his arm, I got so damn excited I damn near wagged my ass. Reason being is because not too long ago a fellow tattoo artist whom I have great admiration and respect for named Jun Cha tattooed this same picture onto a rapper named Freddy Gibbs. It was beautiful, stunning, inspiring and just plain damn great work. I hoped one day I could have the honor of tattooing that piece onto someone and have it pop up next to his lol! I felt that day came. The client sat like a brick for 7 hours. What’s really cool about this is that it’s part 1 of his half sleeve that he’s dedicating to Black Power. Raise ya fists y’all!!!!

This was created with a 3 bugpin liner, 7 textured liner, 15 bugpin curved magnum and Eternal and Intenze inks.
